"Chicago's Premier Soul Food Restaurant For Over 50 Years"

HISTORY OF THE SOUL QUEEN

A self-made business leader who has developed an avidly loyal following over the past five decades, the former Helen Corine Lewis was born in Alabama and entered the work force at the age of only 9 years.

Her first exposure to food service was as a dishwasher for the United States Corps of Engineers, and she met and married Hubert Maybell, and together they came to Chicago and opened the H& H Cafe, which over many years became a haven visited by many national, international and local celebrities. Helen opened her own restaurant, Soul Queen, in 1971, establishing a Chicago tradition. She opened her current location, on 90th and Stony Island Avenue, in 1975.

An outstanding person who was herself denied a formal education, Helen Maybell Anglin has long been known to give young people spiritual and financial encouragement to digest all the education they can: to reach for the stars.

A masterful soul food cook, Helen has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey and the Warner Saunders television programs, and her first recipes were published by the Peoples Gas, Light and Coke Company where she served as consultant and instructor. She was also consultant for the Riceland Rice and the Creamettes companies, and had additional recipes circulated all over the country, some via The Ladies Home Journal.

Always mindful of her civic responsibilities, Helen supports and is active in the N.A.A.C.P., the League of Black Women Voters and the Negro College Fund. She is an original Board Member of the PUSH Foundation, and a vital participant in the Many Community Programs for the PUSH/Rainbow Coalition.Helen Maybell Anglin is a highly visible, dedicated resident of Chicago's South Side Community.
